Sotheby’s disappointed with a result of jewelry sales

Geneva – On November 19, Sotheby’s held the largest jewelry sales of this season. The auction catalogue included 371 lots many of which were unique, exclusively valuable works of jewelry art.

Sotheby’s do not hide the disappointment with the results of the sales. Almost half of represented lots were not sold; therefore the total result was essentially below the calculated sum. The sales totaled in over $15 800 000 that makes less than one third of result of similar auction in May.

Brilliant as a symbol of disaster

In past month Sotheby’ s met with one of the biggest failure during the whole history of Jewelry Auctions. At the close of trading that was held in Hong Kong on October, 7 about a half of lots was not sold. Moreover Sotheby’ s has not managed to realize the main top-lot — a unique necklace with a huge yellow brilliant of 102,56 carats weight. The estimate of luxurious carcanet encrusted besides the main stone with a handful of smaller brilliants encased in pink gold reached HKD 58 000 000–74 000 000 (about $7 468 000–9 528 000). It is important to know that a stone of such a size and purity had been never put up on open sales before.

Elegant Armor: jewelry innovations in the Museum of Arts and Design

On September 27, the New York Museum of Arts and Design opened the exhibition of modern jewelry art Elegant Armor: The Art of Jewelry. Organized under auspices of the fund of Tiffany & Co. Foundation the exhibition aimed to show the best achievements of jewelry art of the late 20th century and to reflect the basic trends of development of jewelry design. The exposition included over 130 works selected from funds of the museum which has one of the largest for today collection of modern jewelry art.
