Edward Munch’s Museum in Oslo is holding the exhibition Munch becoming” Munch”. The exposition represents works of 1880s and also works created in 1890s when the artist was already famous.

The first part of the exhibition is devoted to early years of Munch’s work. He connected his life with art when he was 17 years old. Pictures of the beginning of 1880s – city landscapes of Christiania (from 1905 – Oslo), portraits of relatives and friends represent Munch as the talented master of colour and composition, brave experimenter searching for new forms, images and ideas. Some of his works were made under the influence of numerous foreign trips. Family and the state helped the artist traveled abroad for many times. In the end of 1880s he lived and worked in Paris where he was influence a lot by impressionists. Vincent van Gogh’s creative method found its progress in many following works by the Norwegian expressionist.

Malevich, Munch and Degas justified expectations

New York – On November 3, Sotheby’s finished evening sales Impressionist’s and Modern Art totaled at $223 812 500. On the one hand this figure is hardly successful: Sotheby’s managed to sell 45 from 70 presented lots and the sales did not fetch the announced $300 000 000. Nevertheless the management of the auction house is in rather positive mood. “There were many expectations concerning these sales, – the head of department of modernism and impressionism Simon Show comments. – They became the first serious test of the art market in new economic situation. And what we have seen today proves that the art market has survived”.

On October Sotheby’s auction house, on the threshold of November auctions Impressionist and Modern Art, held a large preauction exhibition of painting of impressionists and art of the 20th century. Auction top lots were represented on October, 2 and 3 in London, and then, in the middle of the month were delivered to Moscow. Among a series of masterpieces the visitors of the exhibition had an opportunity to see Edward Munch’s celebrated picture Love and Pain (1894) which is also well known as Vampire. The masterpiece by the great impressionist was in private collections for more than a hundred years and practically was not exhibited anywhere, except for the New York Metropolitan Museum.

Mao is at its best

Sotheby’s London department – On October 2, the Old Masters, Modern and Contemporary Prints auction will take place. It will cover more than four centuries of the world graphic art. Among 313 lots there are works by such artists as E. Munch, E. Warhol, P. Picasso, A. Durer, A. Matisse.

The auction catalogue indicates the consumer’s demand: graphic art of the 20th century is more popular than Old masters. The most expensive lot in this category is a collection of 22 graphic sheets by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. It is estimated at £150 000-200 000. This collection is on the fifth place among the Sotheby’s top lots. Moreover, Albrecht Durer’s magnificent etching “Nemesis” (£20 000-30 000) dated 1502 is at the 42 place. The rating of Sotheby’s top lots consists of various graphic works of modernism.
