International Gala of Contemporary Art

Georg Baselitz, sold for € 225 400

The Dorotheum’s second auction week of 2009 already promises to be one of its most successful. The highly international selection of the auction of contemporary art on 13th May 2009 was received with considerable – and similarly international – interest. All of the top lots found new owners, not least the double portrait by Georg Baselitz’ „Pullover oben“ with bidding rapidly climbing to a final 225 400 Euro (Cat. No. 227).

Appreciation, in every sense of the word, was particularly great for two Italian paintings, with Gastone Novelli’s mixed technique „Un mono multiforme“ of 1961 reaching 179.800 Euro (Cat. No. 202), and Valerio Adami’s Pop masterpiece Study for a hotel room eventually sold for 128 000 Euro (“Studio per una camera d’albergo“ Cat. No. 204). A mysterious diptych by David Salle „Snowflake“ gained some sparkle at 107 800 Euro (Cat. No. 275).

The art nouveau auction also shone, with several lamp enjoying a marked appreciation in price, such as Maurice Bouval’s table lamp „Le chardon“ with its glass shade in the form of a thistle, selling at 34.500 Euro (Cat. No. 73), or a ten-light Lily table lamp from the Tiffany Studios New York, which went for an excellent 27 100 Euro (Cat. No. 122).
