EBay forbid to sell works from ivory

Chessmen. Ivory. Great Britain. Circa 1880. Ivory, carving. Private collection

The management of the world’s largest ЕBay internet auction made a decision to impose a ban for transactions with works made from ivory. This decision was accepted in order to avoid problems with the legislation regulating a turn of valuable material. “We have no possibility to observe all the rules of sale of works from ivory”, − the Press Secretary of Internet auction explained. Last year EBay imposed a ban for the international operations with ivory. However its sales in the USA were not over and “caused anxiety among interested sides”.

New rules have exceptions for objects with a rather small part of ivory such as furniture and musical instruments. Thus lots should date from 1900. As to jewelry, chess and other works made from much more usage of ivory the new rule works without exceptions.
