Brigit Bordo

The Christie’s International department of photo is going to hold in April, 2009 the third auction of photoworks from the collection of famous collector Gert Elfering. The catalogue of the auctions will include 135 best pictures by such photographers as Irvin Penn, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Leni Riefenstahl. The auction is to fetch $2 000 000-3 000 000.

Gert Elfering collected one of the best collections of photo of the 20th century for all his life. He was a photographer in his youth. It was the period when he reveals the world of fashion, beauty and elevated style of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other magazines – shocking and exquisite works by outstanding photographers, such as Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Irvin Penn. In spite of the fact that the collector made his career in another sphere he saved the passion for photo for all his life. Collecting originals of world famous photoworks he created one of the best collections in this sphere. Elfering managed to see the quality and extraordinary side in many pictures rejected by public or critics. The beauty celebration in all its ways – nature, abstract forms, architecture became the central theme of his collection. However nevertheless the main theme of a collection is the beauty of woman stylized and idealized.

The first auction of photos from the Gert Elfering’s collection was held by Christie’s in 2005 and stated the collector as the legislator of tastes. The second auction devoted exclusively to works by Horst P. Horst took place in 2007. Both sessions were noted with great interest of participants. The forthcoming auctions will include the works which Elfering initially planned to save in his collection. The decision to leave them came to him in the course of making up of the catalogue which gave him a unique opportunity to share his passion with people.

Gert Elfering was always fond of works by great photographers who worked for magazines for the last 50 years. Cult photos by Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and Irvin Penn will make the basis of the April auctions. Among Newton’s photos will be Tied Torso and unique Polaroid pictures. Irvin Penn will be represented with his photos of the nude models Kate Moss and Giselle. Works by Patrick Demarchelier, Frank Horvat, Peter Lindberg and Jean Lui Sieff will be accompanied with Peter Berd and Leni Riefenstahl’s documentary shots from Africa, marine landscapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto and also photo portraits of celebrated artists and musicians – Miles Davis, Picasso, Stravinsky and others.
