Once Pablo Picasso dreamt his works to have been hung near the pictures by Velasquez, Goya, Manet and many other artists he used to admire. Today, 35 years after the death of the great modernist his dream became a reality. On October 8, the Parisian Grand Palace will open the Picasso and Masters exhibition which will represent world famous masterpieces by the Spanish artist and also the pictures by those painters whom he admired all his life including El Greco, Titian, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Gauguin.

“The exhibition will absolutely change your opinion either about the creativity of Picasso or those artists whom he considered his teachers”, – the curator of the exhibition Anne Baldassari comments, – “These masterpieces have never been exposed together earlier. Owing to Picasso, this project is possible”.

The exposition of the exhibition which will be held in the Grand Palace, Louvre and a museum d’Orse will include more than 200 pictures and drawings provided by the museums and private collections from every corner of the globe.

“Picasso copied the works by the Old masters from his childhood, at first in the Madrid Prada Museum and then in Louvre” – informs the second curator of the exhibition, the head of the Louvre department of modern art Marie – Laure Bernadac, – “He admired almost everything, not only the works of certain masters. That is why it is important to see all these masterpieces together”.

The major part of the exposition will take place under a glass dome of the Grand Palace where 19 years old Picasso presented his works for the first time within the limits of the International exhibition in 1900. Since then, he spent many years, copying Velasquez and Francisco Surbaran whose works will be presented from the collection of Prado Museum. The second exhibition will be held in Louvre where the pictures by the artist created under the influence of Delacroix’s work will be displayed. The third exposition will be opened in the museum d’ Orse and will show Picasso’s works near Edward Manet’s masterpieces.

The unique in its scale and cultural significance exhibition will be held under the financial support of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA Corporation.

The Picasso and the Masters exhibition will be opened from October 8 – February 2, 2009
