Pop culture of 1970s at Christie’s sales

“Beatles” split up many years ago. However, the number of admirers of cult group did not reduce. It proves the results of Christie’s Popular culture rock & pop memorabilia sales which took place on July, 10 in South Kensington, England. Numerous “relicts” of rock idols of the last century fetched considerable
₤1 599 675 and as usually, the major part of this sum were things connected with “Beatles”.

The celebrated drum represented on the cover of the first Beatles’ disk Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) was the main top lot. The drum which was considered as the cult attribute and the main element of the iconography of the group in 1960s was bought by the unknown collector for ₤ 541 250.

The song copy Give Peace a Chance was sold by auction for record ₤ 421 250. This song made by John Lennon in spring of 1969 in the suit of the Queen Elisabeth Montreal hotel became the real march against war in Vietnam.

The auction represents also other things of the legendary Beatles’ frontman. They are the Lennon’s famous spectacles in which he is on the cover of Mind Games (1973) single. The lot was sold for ₤ 39 650. The bottle of «Krug» champagne decorated with autographs of participants of the group fetched ₤7500.

Jimmy Hendrix’s guitar amplifier which he used during legendary Woburn Music Festival concert on July, 1968 was the most expensive lot.

Equipment of the legendary guitarist fetched Christie’s ₤ 48 050 that makes it the third the most expensive lots of the auction. Notably, in 2002 celebrated Hendrix’s Fender Stratocaster Sunburst guitar was estimated at ₤ 340 000. In spite of the fact that Hendrix’s guitar was not bought it is considered one of the most expensive instruments in the world.

The present auction represented the guitar of the famous musician Pete Townshend of The Who group. The Gibson SG Special of 1967 was sold for
₤32 450 that makes it the third among the most expensive lots of the auction.
