“Yemen is a country of fragrances. Examples of traditional culture”

On January 22 the exhibition “Yemen is a country of fragrances. Examples of traditional culture” was being opened in the halls of The State Museum of Oriental Art. It is dedicated to traditional culture of Yemen which is a country with great history and one of the most mysterious and thinly populated regions of Arabia at the same time. It was mentioned in the Bible as a country of “tsarina Savskaya”, a place where fragrant plants such as incense and myrrh grew. There were legends about the riches of its inhabitants. Archeological investigations of the last decades revealed the monuments of highly developed civilization. Long before Christ its founders erected monumental temples and towns, constructed vast irrigation schemes, created remarkable works of art, left numerous written records.

Archeological discovery of “Happy Arabia” was made. Russian scientists, archeologists, ethnographers continue these investigations. All those people have been working at The Republic of Yemen for 25 years as members of The Complex Soviet-Yemeni Expedition at first and now as members of The Complex Russian-Yemeni Expedition of Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The exhibition is made by experts, members of the expedition from Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography – Kunstcamera, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, The State Museum of Oriental Art.

More than one hundred items are displayed from the collection of The State Museum of Oriental Art, Kunstcamera and private collections.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see different utensils, national costumes for men and women, jewelry, hats, combs, cosmetic bottles, national daggers, works of modern artists who visited Yemen. People will be involved into a traditional world of Yemen residents with a help of a great quantity of audiovisual material and a lecture about a progressing work of Russian scientists.

The exhibition is dedicated to the anniversary of 25 years of work of The Complex Soviet-Yemeni Expedition/ The Complex Russian-Yemeni Expedition and to the memory of academician Boris Piotrovsky who was an expedition research advisor and the centenary of whom is celebrated this year.
