Gold of SHM

The exhibition «Gold: Metal of Gods and God of Metals» continues its work in The State Historic Museum. One can see outstanding historical and cultural monuments of the last two millenniums made of gold or with its use that usually are kept in SHM funds.

The first section represents models of Orthodox church service (icons, books etc.). Also one can become acquainted with unique monuments of other Christian confessions and other religions.

The second section represents objects that are connected with some events of Russian and world history and historic persons. One can see nuggets, state weight standards, unique enamel portraits of Peter I and its heirs, precious arms, medals. For the first time «regiment silver» (vessels, cups and vases) of the oldest regiments of the Russian Army is shown.

The third section represents gold as the symbol of richness and luxury. There are highly artistic antique, East-European and Russian samples of utensil, jewelry decorations, clocks, snuffboxes, cigar cases, stamps in gold casing, Monuments of European baroque, rococo, classic art, Empire style and modern art are represented together with the works of Russian jewelers of VII–XVIII centuries and with the works of jewelry firms of Sazikov, Khlebnikov, Ovchinnikov, Faberge.

The special section is dedicated to gold items of the XX century. These are mostly the objects that carry unique image of socialistic époque that on one side was characterized by officially advocated ascetic way of life and on the other side produced luxury jewelry items of gold and gems.

The exhibition will be opened till December, the 10th, 2010.
