Zinaida Serebriakova in the Russian State Museum

Serebriakova Z. At the dressing table. Self-portrait. 1909. Oil on canvas

October, the 11th will be the opening day of the exposition “Zinaida Serebriakova. Naked”. The exposition is going to take place in the Russian State museum, Benois Wing. Unique works of the artist created for the villa “Manuar du Rele” of baron de Brouera will be demonstrated in Russia for the first time.

Canvas were painted in 1936–1937 and correspond to the late cycle of Zinaida Serebriakova’s pictures. They came upon Russia thanks for the “Trumph” gallery that negotiated with baron’s heirs on their purchase for more than two years. Representatives of the gallery deny to tell the sum that was paid for the collection.

Zinaida Yevgenyievna Serebriakova belonged to the old painters dynasty Benois- Lanseray. She lived in St.Petersburg at her grandfather’s where future founders of the union “Mir iskusstva” (“World of Art”) – her uncle Alexander Benois, her brother Yevgeniy Lanceray, Lev Bakst, Konstantin Somov and others – gathered.

Serebriakova showed her paintings openly for the first time in 1910 on the 8th exposition of the Union of Russian Painters. She demonstrated 14 works, among them her famous self-portrait “At the dressing table”. In 1912 she joined the “Mir iskusstva”. A lot of members of this association were her friends and relatives.

Revolution was dramatic for Serebriakova. Her husband died in March, 1919 and she was left alone with four children. In 1924 she left for Paris planning to earn money there and return to the Motherland.

But she had to remain in Paris for the rest of her life (1967). She lived in poverty almost all the time getting by rare orders. One of her largest works is hall paintings in the villa “Manuar du Rele” in Pommereil. To fulfil this order Serebriakova – as she admitted herself – had to learn sculptures in Louvre halls and the specifics of making such assembles. Her daughter Kate acted as a model for this order.

After the World War II when baron de Brouera died, the house was sold and the paintings were kept in cellars where they suffered from dampness and rats.

Besides eight pictures from the villa “Manuar du rele” visitors of the exposition will see several tens of her pictures from the collection of the Russian State Museum, Tretyakov Gallery, Peterhof State Museum Reserve and Museum of Modern Art in Ulyanovsk.
