«Gelos»: Traditional Auction of the Season

On October 27, the auction house «Gelos» will hold Sales of the Season. Traditionally, organizers of the event put up for sale a variety of antique pieces. A special section of the auction is dedicated to important paintings.

Auctioneers anchor their hopes upon two paired vases depicting scenes on mythological subjects («Venus’s Toilette» and «Cupid on a Chariot and Three Graces»). The unique vases (starting price 27,000 roubles) were produced at the Gardner porcelain factory circa 1870s–1890s. Among other probable top-lots of the sale are a porcelain sculpture «Peasant Making a Bast Shoe» (Gardner factory, late XIX century, starting price 20,000 roubles) and «Bear’s Dance» (starting price 40,000).

The auction is held simultaneously in Moscow and in Kiev on-line. The top-lot of the Ukrainian selection is a porcelain statuette «Katherine» (Ukraine, 1920–1930) featuring an inscription from a poem by the renowned Ukrainian poet and writer Taras Shevtchenko on the base of the figurine (estimate $1,000–2,000). Alas, the lot failed to sell at auction on September 30. The starting price of the statuette was lowered from $1,000 to $750.

The jewelry section of the Moscow auction features selection of Russian decorations of the late XIX–early XX century. The Art Nouveau gold pendant with precious gemstones is estimated at 10,000–14,000 roubles (starting price 8,000).

The antique weapons section includes three Masonic swords of the late XIX century (the USA, starting price 18,000–22,000 roubles), Caucasian, Japanese and German daggers of the late XIX–thirst third of XX century. A dueling pistol set in a wooden case is estimated to fetch around 160,000 roubles. The set contains two pistols, steel rod, bullet mold, powder flask, box with primer caps, bullets and wads. The set was made in the Great Britain in the second half of XIX century. The starting price of the lot is 120,000 roubles.

The rare book section features the first issue of the journal «Futurists. The first journal of Russian futurists» (No1–2, 1914, published by D. Burliuk, editor-in-chief V. Kamensky). The unique edition includes illustrations by artists V. and D. Burliuk, A. Ekster and early works by V. Mayakovsky, V. Shershenevich, D. Burliuk, N. Burliuk, V. Khlebnikov and Igor Severyanin. The starting price of the lot is 5,000 roubles.
