Kronach’s «Madonna» Sold at Auction

A Swiss auction house Galerie Fischer was holding sales titled Fine Art Auction 395 through May 31–June 6. The large-scale auction comprised about 5,800 lots: paintings, drawings, rare books, antique furniture, decorative and applied art, sculptures, silverware and porcelain from the major Swiss private collections.

The top-lot of the sales was a painting «Madonna with a Racemation» («Die Madonna mit der Traube») by a famous artist Lucas Kronach the Elder (1472–1553). The exceptional oil on board painting dates back to 1534 (size 50,0 x 33,5 cm). Estimated at CHF 800,000–1,000,000 the lot was hammered at staggering CHF 1,258,000 ($1,006,400 or €811,612).

It is known, that the great artist painted images of Madonna with a racemation several times. Around 1540 he made a number of copies from the painting. Reportedly, the picture sold at the Swiss auction is the earliest of the author’s variants.
