Designer interiors at Dorotheum

On May, 9 the sales of furniture and interior decorations where the works of famous designers and rare objects for the most exquisite interiors will be shown will take place in Vienna department of the auction house Dorotheum.

More than 350 lots of the auction collection include furniture of various styles of the XX century, vases and many unique objects that don’t look like ordinary household objects.

G. Pesce. Cupboard. 1994–1995. Height 178 cm, width 56 cm, depth 32 cm. Estimate €9,000–12,000

Among them – an object meant for sitting and entitled «Big Easy Mixed». It was created by the famous designer of the XX–XXI centuries Ron Arad. The unusual armchair was produced in small series and multiple waves and curves of aluminum and chrome gave it the glory on design fetish. The armchair was designed in 1988, but the sample from Dorotheum collection is one of the twenty objects produced in 2003. The estimate of the lot – €40,000–50,000.

The objects by Le Corbusier, Gaetano Pesce, Gabriella Crespi, Gio Ponti and other designers will be featured at dales. Unique interior decorations and a balustrade created in 1985 by Ettore Sottsass for the exhibition hall of «Esprit» company in Dusseldorf attract particular attention. Each element is estimated €24,000–30,000.
The most important lot of the forthcoming sales is the small grey chair created by Otto Wagner in 1912 for his apartment in Vienna. The height of the chair is 95.5 cm and the depth of the seat – 45.5 cm. The estimate of the lot is €70,000–90,000. The interior of Vienna apartment of the famous architect was thought out in every detail and glistered with subtle luxury. The chair that will be sold at Dorotheum was created especially for the hall, where all the objects were painted in different shades of grey.

Gaetano Pesce, who was called the designer of the year in Austria not long ago, created one more unusual object that just a little bit reminds of a cupboard. It is to fulfill this function in the interior, but from the exterior it looks like an exclusive decorative object. The cupboard was produced in 1994–1995 for a big American advertising agency. It consists of the black lacquer body and two bright doors with the image of Gaetano in profile. The estimate of the lot is € 9,000–12,000.

The collection of the design furniture and interior decorations is the separate section of the sales of Dorotheum house from 1996 and it became one of the most popular and demanded among the collectors and connoisseurs of exquisite design in continental Europe.
