The Spring Auction of Soviet Paintings in Moscow

A. Levitin. Shadows in March. 1981. Oil on canvas. 50,0 x 50,0 cm. Estimate $5,500

The late March and early April will be especially eventful this year. The Central House of Artists will host a unique exhibition of works by a renowned Russian artist Nikita Fedosov through March 28–April 4. A pre-sale display of works by Soviet artists, organized by the Russian Art Gallery will take place in the House a bit later, from April 4 to April 10.

The Spring auction of collectible Soviet Paintings will be held on April 15. Following the tradition, the sales will be conducted in the «Sovetsky» hotel.

The auctioned collection comprises 85 lots. Estimates of the presented works range between $500 and $50,000.

The scientific consultant of the Russian Art Gallery is the chairman of the Russian Commonwealth of Artists, a USSR people’s artist Valentin Sidorov, while the leading expert of the sale is a prominent art critic Vitaly Manin, the author of more than 40 scientific works dedicated to Soviet and Russian art.

A Tkatchev. A Village Pasture. 1987. Oil on canvas. 50,0 x 70,0 cm. Estimate $23,000

The coming auction will feature paintings by N. Repin, A. Levitin, N. Fomin, M. Anikeev and others. One of the probable top-lots of the event is a picture «A Village Pasture» by A. Tkatchev. The work created in 1987 continues the artist’s favorite subject – rural everyday life. The lot is expected to fetch about $23,000.

Other highlights include: «Shadows in March» by A. Levitin (1981, estimate $5,500); two works by V. Ivanov «Horses at the River» (1997) and «A Cloud over Isadami» (1980), each estimated at $7,000; a landscape painting «An Autumn Day of Clear Sky» by V. Sidorov (estimate $12,000).

Bidders and visitors to the event will also have an opportunity to learn more about the featured artists and to feel the atmosphere of that time, as the organizers of the auction will offer all comers the almost forgotten Soviet sweets, lemonade, compote and of course the «Soviet champagne».
