The «Sovcom» Gallery will launch an auction devoted to Soviet and modern art on March 11. The important sales will start with classic works by Russian painters of XIX century and finish with Soviet underground artworks dating 1960–1980.

The first part of the sale will feature paintings by many distinguished Russian artist of XIX–early XX century: Andrey Shilder, Nikolai Dubovsky, Grigory Kapustin, Boris Kamensky, Yakov Sokolov, Nikolai Nevrev. A canvas «A Beauty at a Mirror» (1845, 234 И 118 cm) by Nikolai Maikov (a son of a renowned poet) is an unquestionable top-lot in this section. Though quite a lot of Maikov’s paintings are displayed in the State Russian Museum, a work by the master is put up for public sale for the first time. The exceptional art piece is expected to fetch from $220,000 to $230,000.

Among other highlights of the first part of the sales are sketches to a Tchaikovsky’s opera «Evgeny Onegin» (1935) by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. Two watercolour and gouache on paper sketches to women costumes are estimated at $7,000–8,000.

The second top-lot of the sales is a landmark painting by Valentin Serov «Lenin Proclaims the Soviet Era». Taken from the USSR to France in the late 1980s the work was acquired by a prominent collector G. Basmadjan. The pre-sale estimate of the works is $160,000–170,000.

A painting «Coal to Motherland! Miners Deliver the Above-plan Coal to New Construction Sites» promises to be a great success with buyers. Many coal industry magnates as well as Russian and foreign collectors have already sent their bids in order to «fight» for the art piece.
