A sketch by Sylvia Plath and other memorabilia at Bonhams

Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath

A pencil sketch by poet Sylvia Plath of her husband, British poet Ted Hughes, will go up for auction this autumn in London. The sketch, portraying Hughes wearing a dinner jacket and bow tie and absorbed in reading, is the only known sketch by Plath. It was done in 1957, a year after the two had been married, and six years before Plath would commit suicide. The sketch is a poignant record of the early happiness of the couple. The starting price of the sketch is $40,000, but it’s expected to go for much more than that.

Bonhams Auction house plans to sell the drawing along with selection of nearly 300 portraits of writers, artists, musicians and philosophers, coming from the collection of manuscript expert Roy Davids. Davids’s collection contains memorabilia from Shakespeare, Spenser, Johnson, Byron, Dickens, Disraeli, Yeats, Reynolds, Whistler, Matisse, Lowry, Larkin and Heaney.
