Euro Coins Genesis exhibition

The Euro Coins Genesis exhibition is now on view at St James Cavalier in Valetta, Malta. Here you can learn about the competition to design the euro coins introduced in 2002. The exhibition shows all the designs for the European and national images on the euro coins which reached the final stage of the competition organized in 1997-1998. The designs have been provided by the national mints or government departments of the 12 countries of the euro area.

Nowadays, European Union consists of 18 republics and seven constitutional monarchies. Four of the monarchies are in the euro area (Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg). Historically, and often constitutionally, the portrait of the reigning monarch must feature on their coins. This was the case for all four countries, at least for the one and two euro coins, although some of them nevertheless organized design competitions.

Euro Coins Genesis exhibition has already been shown in Brussels (March 2003), Frankfurt (September 2003), Siena (October 2003) and Estonia (December 2004 – January 2005).
