Splotches by Sol LeWitt on the roof

Sol LeWitt. Splotch No 15, 2005. Acrylic on fiberglass. 365,8 x 254,0 x 203,2 cm

Five sculptures and one wall drawing by the celebrated American artist Sol LeWitt (born 1928) are on view in the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden through October 30, 2005. The artist’s recent painted conceptual fiberglass sculptures, which are called «Splotches», and a wall drawing for the roof garden’s eastern wall, are exhibited in the 10,000 square foot open-air space that offers spectacular panorama of Central Park and the New York City skyline.

LeWitt has created large-scale, painted fiberglass works with a palette of bold colors. Their undulating shapes and vibrant hues brilliantly engage with the natural landscape of Central Park. LeWitt’s wall drawing, «Whirls and Twirls», echoes the abstract forms and vivid color of the «Splotches».
