Mixed media works by Karen Schumann

A self-taught artist in mixed media Karen Schuman received the Best In Show Award in the ‘Landscapes and Mindscapes Art Exhibit’ at The Art House, Illinois, May 2005. Integrating sewing, painting and beadwork in the batik art, she brings three-dimensionality to two-dimensional pieces.

Karen Shumann carefully observes the world around her; she studies the way people perform their daily rituals, their beliefs, choices they make trying to find the underlying motives upon which we act.

Using a loose batik style, vivid dyes, and flowing fabrics Karen Shumann creates visual art that depicts the beauty and power of Earth’s natural elements, and to capture the awe and inspiration given to us when we appeal to them. Her art is a mixture of materials, ideas and symbols. She inter-mixes paintings of acrylic and gouache both on batik-dyed fabric and handmade paper and adds three-dimensionality to her works with fabric appliqué, beadwork and quilting.
