Third Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art Opens

The Third Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art opens today and will be on view through April 18 in Berlin. The founding of the berlin biennial for contemporary art in 1998 institutionalized an international biennial unique to Germany. The heterogeneity of Berlin which derives from the myth of its past, from the alternative, subcultural and critical practice of the 1980s and early 1990s as well as from politically and economically motivated redefinitions and shifts caused by its role as the ‘New Capital’‚ is the reference point fort he 3rd berlin biennial.

During the course of the 3rd berlin biennial there will be weekly radio programmes in collaboration with, discussions, readings and kooperative events with other cultural institutions in Berlin. The 3rd berlin biennial will conclude with a three-day Performance Jam from April 16th to April 18th 2004 at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art.

The venues that have already been announced – the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin-Mitte and the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin-Kreuzberg – will be complemented by a third location: the Cinema Arsenal on Potsdamer Platz. Cooperation with the Friends of the German Film Archive (Verein Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek) will enable the 3rd berlin biennial to screen its comprehensive programme of films at this cinema.
