Homage to Camille Pissarro at Musée d’Orsay

Musée d’Orsay presents “Homage to Camille Pissarro (1830-1903),” on view through November 16, 2003. To celebrate the centenary of the painter Pissarro’s death in Paris, on November 13, 1903 (he was born in 1830 in Saint-Thomas in the West Indies, then a Danish territory), the Musée d’Orsay has chosen to present in a single gallery all the paintings by the artist included in its collection (with the exception of those currently on loan for exhibitions in other museums).

It is through gifts and bequests, in particular that of the sponsor and trusted friend of Pissarro, the painter Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), that a collection now totalling forty two paintings was constituted. Among donators, Etienne Moreau-Nélaton (1859-1927), Antonin Personnaz (1854-1936), Paul Gachet (1873-1962), Dr Eduardo Mollard (1863-1947) and Max Kaganovitch (1891-1978) have requested that their gifts should be grouped in particular galleries. This temporary presentation displaying together for the first time this exceptional series of paintings by the elder of the impressionist group, is an opportunity to retrace the landscape painter’s career through motifs that evoke his successive residence in Louveciennes (Yvelines) from 1869 to 1872, Pontoise (Val d’Oise) and finally in Eragny-sur-Epte (Oise), from 1884 onwards, as well as his trips (in particular sojourns at with his friend the artist Piette in Monfoucault in Mayenne). Chronological, it underlines the artist’s evolution from his beginnings, in which he took inspiration in Corot’s and the Realists’ works, up to the blooming of his impressionist period. After the brief episode, around 1886-1887, during which Pissarro adopted his young colleagues Seurat and Signac’s neo-impressionist theories, the painter achieved a personal synthesis of his research that marks his later period. The exhibition was curated by Anne Distel, general curator, Musée d’Orsay.
