TWO CULTURE MINISTERS CONSIDER YEAR OF RUSSIA IN GERMANY AND YEAR OF GERMANY IN RUSSIA PROJECTS

A two-day meeting between Russian culture minister Mikhail Shvydkoi and German State minister for cultural and media affairs Christina Weiss is taking place in Saint Petersburg. During the meeting the parties considered the Year of Russia in Germany and Year of Germany in Russia projects, Mikhail Shvydkoi reported to journalists.

According to him, events within the framework of the Year of Russia in Germany, which is now underway, will continue till the end of December and the Frankfurt Book Fair will become one of the latest significant events.

On September 23, an exhibition titled “Communism as a dream factory” will open in Frankfurt. The Culture minister pointed out that it would be “the largest exhibition devoted to socialist realism as a phenomenon of cultural and ideological life of the 20th century.” Apart from this, an exhibition devoted to restoration of the church of Assumption on the Bolotov field in Nizhny Novgorod will be opened on September 26 in Frankfurt, and on September 27 the “Moscow-Berlin” exhibition would start its work in Berlin.

Shvydkoi also indicated that during the meeting the parties had considered the Year of Germany in Russia project to be commenced on 21 May 2004 and completed in November. The minister reported that “most probably the Year would be end with a Moscow concert of the prominent Berlin symphony orchestra from Germany”.
